The first ESBK race weekend of the 2025 Spanish Superbike Championship took place at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit from April 3rd to 6th.
The race weekend had started well, as Gil Motor Sport rider Christophe Ponsson climbed onto the podium in the first round to celebrate his well-deserved third place.
Qualifying in fifth position despite the fact that in the final part of his fastest lap, Christophe Ponsson was setting the third fastest time of the qualifying session when he was hindered by a slower competitor in front of him.
As required by the regulations, the third place achieved in the first round on Saturday allowed Christophe Ponsson and his BMW to start the second round on Sunday in third position on the starting grid. The team’s hopes of repeating a podium finish in the second round were therefore legitimate!
Unfortunately, fate decided otherwise, as the Gil Motor Sport rider crashed violently on his head on the third lap of this second round, triggering a red-flagged stoppage of the race so he could be evacuated by ambulance, initially to the circuit’s mobile clinic, which, after initial tests, decided to transfer him to the Jerez de la Frontera hospital for a CT scan.
Ultimately, Christophe Ponsson remained under observation for 24 hours at the hospital before returning from Andalusia for a period of convalescence accompanied by follow-up by a neurology specialist.
Given Christophe Ponsson’s well-known determination, there is no doubt that he will be ready for the next ESBK race, which will take place in Catalonia at the Circuit de Barcelona from June 19th to 22nd.
