Superbike World Championship in Misano Adriatico – Italy 🇮🇹

Christophe Ponsson #23 returns from the Misano circuit with a right collarbone to operate

Free Practice 1: This is the best start of the race weekend for the driver and team Gil Motor Sport which has achieved its best time of the Yamaha leader, the 2021 Superbike World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu at +1’492 seconds, as well as +1’251 of the 2020 Supersort Locatelli World Champion, +0’339 of the official Yamaha the American Gerloff and 0’883 seconds faster than the official Yamaha Japanese Nozane.

Free Practice 2: The driver Christophe Ponsson confirms in this FP2 by reducing the gaps, +1’337 of the Turkish driver Razgatlioglu, +0’847 on the American Gerloff, +0’531 of the local driver Locatelli and again faster of 0’274 of the Japanese rider Nozane.

Free Practice 3: Saturday morning’s FP3 puts Gil Motor Sport driver Christophe Ponsson of the fastest Yamaha Razgatlioglu of +1’655 seconds which will prove to be the biggest gap of all the sessions of the weekend covered by our driver Christophe Ponsson, +1’274 from Locatelli, +1’205 from Gerloff and +0’244 from the Japanese driver Nozane.

Superpole: on the one hand there is a satisfaction since the private driver Gil Motor Sport Christophe Ponsson who will start from 16th position on the starting grid is only 1’666 seconds behind the fastest driver of this qualifying session then currently leading the championship the factory pilot Ducati Alvaro Bautista. And on the one hand regrets since Christophe PONSSON fell fortunately without gravity, but deprived him of doing his fast lap with his specific tyre to qualify! We also regret that the trail stewards did not let Christophe leave after his fall while the rules allow him!… Despite this, our driver Christophe Ponsson is +1’529 seconds behind the 2021 World Champion Razgatlioglu, +1’045 of the 2020 Supersport World Champion and official Yamaha Locatelli, +0’480 of the American Gerloff and +0’055 of the Japanese driver Nozane.

Race 1: Despite his crash in Superpole, the driver Christophe Ponsson and the team are confident because since the beginning of the weekend, except for a small decline in the FP3, the times at each session have only improved, there was therefore a good place to play for the French driver! Unfortunately, it was at the start of his 3rd lap in the 4th corner that the Gil Motor Sport driver was the victim of a heavy crash that forced him to be evacuated by the medical stretcher team.
In order to understand what happened Christophe wanted to bring the information to his technical team by telling them «from the first corner after the start I did not recognize my bike of the weekend, to the point that I had just decided at the end of the 2nd lap to modify the Maps of the bike from the 3rd lap, I didn’t have the time that in turn 4 of the 3rd lap the bike made a high side and I was thrown in the air! I think this is due to an electronic problem since I had the arrival of engine brake in an unusual location». After the fact Christophe will add that there are races where he does not touch the maps of his bike and others where he happens to modify them but at the end of the race in relation to tire wear but that he has never had to change Maps at the beginning of the race, but that there was something to be done since his bike was so different from what he had since the beginning of the weekend!

Conclusions: The doctors at the circuit mobile clinic diagnose a right clavicle fracture displaced by 2cm as well as a cervical dislocation. Collarbone surgery is inevitable. It is the surgeon Thomas D’Ollnne specialist of the shoulder and knee practicing at the Monegasque Institute of Sports Medicine who performed the pilot Christophe PONSSON.
